Shippan Racquet Club Sends Team
to USTA Nationals
DARIEN, CT (August 30, 2016) – Shippan Racquet Club caps off a successful tennis season with one of their women’s teams qualifying for USTA Nationals.
The Stingers 4.0 Women’s Team conquered the USTA New England Sectionals August 19-21 in South Hadley, Massachusetts that boiled down to one individual win. The team, captained by June Wang, is comprised of women with strong ties to friendship and tennis. Teammate Val Frost said “We are an enthusiastic, energetic and goal driven team. We support each other on and off the court. We are culturally and financially diverse, but read as one, and love to party!”
Other teams the Stingers defeated were from Eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Their total matches won, which was just a one match win over two teams who tied for second place, earned them the title of Sectional Champions.
Team members include Meredith Bergman, Lisa Giometti, Xiaoran Liang, Meg Spescha and team captain, June Wang, from Stamford; Bettina Routh, Michele Tesei and Jessica Yeh, from Greenwich; Lisa Cassells, Val Frost and Wendy Laychak, from Norwalk; Barbara Naparano from Beacon, NY and Kim Siu from Scarsdale, NY.
Shippan Racquet Club also had a women’s 4.5 team who lost in the finals of Sectional Championships, along with Kings Highway Tennis Club, part of the TennisCT family, that had two other teams who advanced to Sectionals.
“We were thrilled to have four teams from our clubs represented in USTA Sectionals and even more excited at the outcome of one team advancing to the Nationals, the highest and most competitive tier of recreational tennis. Our pros have enjoyed seeing their hard work in practice result in great USTA League success. We very proud of everyone’s hard work and determination”, says Shippan Racquet Club Manager, Barb Cavaliere.
